For adults, voice search is a relatively new way of searching that will take some time to get used to over traditional text search, where as for kids, they know no different, voice search is the norm for them. My 6 year old daughter works her around her favourite youtube channels by using voice search, voice search is the new norm. Its like the expectation of the younger generation expecting that all screens are touchscreen, and what do you mean there is no wifi Dad?
Voice search has been around for a few years now on our phones, in our cars, and today in our homes. But how often have we used the technology? Devices such as Alexa and Google Home are becoming more and more popular with millions of devices sold worldwide. Having some element of a smart home is not as expensive as it once was. Soon all our homes will have one of these devices installed.
I myself have a Google home device and use that for playing music on or asking “what is the travel time to work”. When I am searching on my mobile phone or laptop I use text search, that is because this is the way I have been used to searching. Over time that will transfer over to search as the technology demands.
By 2020 it is said that over 50% of all searches will be carried out over voice. That is a huge shift in the way that users will search for information from typing text into a search engine.
What does this mean for your website and business?
Traditionally we have optimised our websites for text searches using short keywords or phrases. Searching over voice tend to use longer, more conversational language. This means that we have to change the way we structure content on our websites so that your business ranks for voice search.
Websites now need to optimise their content for not only text searches but also now for voice searches.
How does voice search respond to a question about your business or product offering?
Get ahead of the curve and start optimising your content for voice search. There is huge potential for local businesses regarding voice search as near me now searches are growing at a rate of +150% per year.
“Hey Google, what restaurants are open near me”
