Are you looking to start your own blog or WordPress site?
Would you like to set up your own website or blog but unsure where or how to start? Here I explain the ways in which I have set up this blog picking a domain name and hosting account.
How to set up your own blog webpage.
There are many ways in which you can set up your own webpage or blog depending level of experience or requirements needed. From one-click installs to a manual install there are lots of ways. One click installs can sometimes give you a subdomain website address such as blog.siteexample.com, also some one-click installs can restrict what plugins are used on the website. This blog website was created using WordPress, purchasing a personalized domain name and hosting from blacknight.com.
Why do I need a domain name and hosting?
A domain name is your website address such as for example www.mysite.com. For a website to function, you need some storage to save the website files and data on. This is called hosting. Hosting is the storage where data for your website is saved. Your domain name then points to hosting. When someone clicks your website address it points to your hosting and shows the user your website.
There are lots of different hosting options which one do I choose?
There are many options and pricing for hosting packages, each option serves for different purposes. Example: A personal blog website may typically be hosted on shared hosting, this means that your website is sitting on a server with more websites also on that server. A corporate or large e-commerce website may be typically hosted on its own dedicated hosting with no other websites using the same storage.
This can be for many reasons including the amount of traffic going to a big e-commerce website does not want to share traffic with other websites which may slow the site down. Having a dedicated server also can enable the company to control restarts and maintenance times of the server updates etc. Different hosting also has technical differences in the number of websites you can have, the number of databases you can have and the number of emails addresses that can be added to the account
For this blog website shared hosting (Linux Minimus Web Hosting) was used from blacknight.com. This lets you host 30 websites on that account with 30 databases, 50 mailboxes and 10GB of space. This is more than enough required to host my single website.
What do I call my website?
One of the first questions you may be thinking of is what to call your blog website. An easy way to get started is to go to https://www.namecheckr.com/ or https://namechk.com/ and check if the .com and social media names are available. Ideally, you would like to have the same social media names as your business website or blog. Having the same name across all platforms will look more professional and enable your business or blog to be found easily without any additional characters or letters in the social media names.
Setting up Domain & Hosting
Once you have decided the domain name to purchase you can then pick a hosting provider to purchase this domain name from. I have chosen blacknight.com to host this website. (For a .ie domain name you must provide some additional documentation with your request and wait for the domain to be activated), for .com you can proceed to set up straight away.
Step 1. Go to blacknight.com
Step 2. Insert domain name you would like to purchase, example: (mydomainnameexample.com) below. Click search
Step 3. Add the domain name to shopping cart
Step 4. Click Shopping Cart
Step 5. You will see in the blue box “there is no hosting in your cart” click the “add hosting now”
Step 6. For this blog, I have selected Minimus hosting which meets the requirements needed for the single blog website.
Step 7. Complete the checkout process, you can select to leave the automatic backup on or off. For a business it would be recommended to leave the automatic backup on so that you can restore the website should you need to
Step 8. You have no purchased a domain name and hosting of which is enough to start your own website or blog. You will be asked to create a username and password for your blacknight control panel login. You will need that to set up your WordPress application on your hosting and also Email mailboxes
To install WordPress, you can follow the instructions that blacknight have provided here
